Karaja, Northwestern Iran, circa 1930–1950
Woven in the village of Karaja in northwestern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, this runner embodies the bold, geometric vocabulary of the Heriz–Karaja weaving tradition. Its sequence of angular medallions, rendered in saturated reds and deep greens, reflects a language of design passed down through generations of village weavers rather than formal workshops.
Knotted in thick mountain sheep wool rich with natural oils, the surface retains a tactile resilience and quiet sheen. Please note that it feels antique with its wear across the field, giving the rug the character of time and use. Both sturdy and expressive, Qafila stands as a record of a landscape and a lineage, a woven memory of the people and places that shaped it.
